Hostel Review: Generator Hostel Berlin Mitte

    by Fizz 04/08/2024

As is often the case when I travel, I recently found myself inbetween two places and with a few days spare, so naturally, my only option was to take myself…

    by Fizz 28/03/2023

The day started like most long travel days: an early morning, no breakfast, a cold trip to the train station, and stealing naps here and there. It ended, not in a hotel in Poland as anticipated, but…

VALIDATE YOUR PUBLIC TRANSPORT TICKETS! ⚠️

Usually there will be signs around the station, but sometimes it’s not obvious.

It tends to involve stamping or punching your ticket at little boxes either on the platform or on the train, but sometimes you might have to hold it up to a scanner.

It’s annoying but important to remember, buying the ticket isn’t enough! If you don’t validate it, you could face fines.

In Helsinki - hold your metro ticket up to the scanners on entry to the platform (yes it’s just paper, but there must be a magnet or a chip inside)

In Berlin - stamp your paper ticket as seen here

In Gdańsk - punch your paper ticket on board

On TEC buses in Belgium - use the app to scan the QR code on board

Where else?

Rules and norms when travelling! 🧳 Some thing Rules and norms when travelling! 🧳

Some things I think could be useful to understand before you travel 🤔

I want to clarify, I don’t think you should try to blend in perfectly as a tourist. It’s just not possible. Similarly, you don’t have to leave behind every bit of your own culture- that’s also not really possible.

But I do think it’s nice to meet the locals where they’re at and adapt to their norms. Not only is it respectful to local culture, but it can enhance your understanding of the area.

What would you add to the list?

I always love sharing these photos. The semi-aband I always love sharing these photos. The semi-abandoned site of the Seville Expo ‘92 🚀

With the theme “The Age of Discoveries”, this universal exhibition celebrated the 500th Anniversary of Columbus’ arrival to the Americas (perhaps not something we’d mark today?).

From what I’ve read online, it looked like a hopeful, futuristic display of science and technology, complete with a monorail! The site was open until the early hours of the morning, and numerous pavilions represented countries, organisations, and pillars of discovery.

Nowadays, the site is partly the Cartuja Science and Technology park, a fitting use of the space, and there’s also a theme park. In the middle of a weekday, it was bizarre to wander around what is essentially a slightly rundown science park, with the occasional employee walking between buildings, and leftover Expo structures on every corner.

We stuffed a 4€ decathlon backpack full of layers and jogged to Granton beach for what felt like my coldest swim ever. Luckily we could get coffee to warm up after, and when we arrived home our flatmate had prepared a belated pancake day brunch for us 🥰 (never mind the fact that it was our duty to introduce her, a Canadian, to British pancake day)

If you ever find yourself in Edinburgh I highly re If you ever find yourself in Edinburgh I highly recommend a sunrise walk up Arthur’s Seat. It will never be quieter up there and watching the pale light wash over the city is very special.

The one good thing about short days is a late sunrises, so this could be a great way to kickstart a winter day!

Thinking about how Gothenburg will look like this Thinking about how Gothenburg will look like this in a few weeks 🇸🇪

Reminiscing on my time spent living there and taking the opportunity to recommend a spring/summer trip to Sweden!

Full disclosure, it was still snowing in March, but the sun shone bright and we took joy in the signs that winter was drawing to a close. Soon to come were long, beeezy summer days of picnics and cafe terraces.

It felt like someone had suddenly upped the saturation except it was real life 📸 🎨

I think it’s also worth pointing out that not everyone uses social media and not everyone uses it in the same way. But since we’re all here, on social media, reading this, it’s safe to say we’re at least a little bit in the social media bubble 🫧
