I remember being under the impression that this was quite normal for Spain, but I understand this instance was slightly more extreme than normal. Our just-in-case decision earlier in the day to buy an umbrella was the right choice when it started to rain mud, although that didn’t save our shoes (mine still have faint pastel orange flecks which I’m hoping pass as an intentional design feature)

The dust clouds are also know as Saharan Air Layer. A lot of it heads west, falling to the ground over and fertilising the Amazon (Severe Weather Europe) as it contains iron and other minerals. Although it’s easy to think orange dust = orange sky, the eerie glow is actually caused by Raleigh scattering, which occurs when light is scattered by particles much shorter than its wavelength

Don’t miss them like I did 🙄).

Also! Consider food when visiting - this could easily become a day trip, and although there are vending machines, the best place to get a full meal is one of the restaurants outside the entrance.

It wasn’t our top priority, but we ended up nearby and thought why not. It houses the colossal Roman mosaics found during the construction of the Plaza de La Corredera, which are beautiful and very impressive for their sheer size and preservation.

The Giralda is the bell tower of Seville Cathedral The Giralda is the bell tower of Seville Cathedral, first built for the mosque during the Almohad era, then added to in a Renaissance style by the Catholics. It’s named after the weather vane on top, the Giraldillo. Several replicas of the Giralda have been built in the states, including Miami’s Freedom Tower and the Wrigley building in Chicago, and although it doesn’t look like it in this photo, the tower actually stands at 104m.
