Poppy from Travel North East South West isn’t just a lovely person to talk to. She also runs a travel blog bursting with more travel stories and information than you could fit into checked baggage. While spending six months travelling in South America clearly provided a lot of material to write about, Poppy has also visited numerous places in North America and Asia, and isn’t a stranger to blogging about some home wonders as well. If you really want to up the dose of travel envy, check out her Instagram page – but don’t be surprised if it makes you want to go on holiday there and then.

Q: What made you start blogging?
A: I’ve read travel blogs for years, I love delving into other people’s journeys! Myself and my partner took a 6 month long trip to South America in 2018, and that coupled with my love of travel blogs and writing inspired me to start one of my own 🙂
Q: How has it met or differed from your expectations?
A: I knew it’d be hard…but it’s really hard! Lots of planning and posts take a lot of work behind the scenes. I love it though.
Q: What’s your favourite culture that you’ve visited?
A: The Peruvian culture was incredible. They still have so many traditions and it’s so nice to see how important their history is to them. I was less keen on the fried guinea pig and snake in Cusco, but it was an experience.
Q: Would you ever move to another state/country permanently?
A: Absolutely. I don’t like the way the UK is heading and so I’d definitely consider a move to Canada – it seems such a happy place to live.
Q: Do you read, and if so how often? Would you like to read more?
A: I do read, but not nearly as much as I should or would like to. I’m actually halfway through Nomadic Matt’s new book about his ten years on the road.
Q: Do you have a celebrity role model?
A: Stacey Dooley. She is the best human on planet earth. Intelligent, down to earth and her documentaries are in my opinion, some of the best
Q: Acoustic or rock music?
A: I like acoustic and rock, but rock just pinches it for me
Q: Sweet or savoury snacks?
A: I have the worst sweet tooth ever. Chocolate, biscuits, anything with sugar I love.
Q: What was the last milestone you achieved on your blog and what is your next one? Assuming that you log milestones, or do you just let it happen?
A: I can’t say I really track milestones – I should probably pay more attention! It’s almost a year since I launched my blog, does that count?
Q: Have you had any travel moments that absolutely stunned you?
A: In Bolivia during our Salar de Uyuni tour. It was the final night and we’d been on top of a volcano 5000m above sea level that day. We’d collected some of the volcanic mud into a water bottle but our guide hadn’t told us why. Fast forward to that evening and we’re visiting the natural hot springs down the track from our accommodation. It was -10 but the springs were 40 degrees. You could see the milky way above us and we sat with a glass of Bolivian red wine, donned the volcanic mud into our faces, and our guide (who was also an amateur star gazer) told us about the stars and planets above us. It was magical.
I don’t know about you, but Poppy’s description of that night in Bolivia just transported me there! It sounds like a fantastic time. If you haven’t come across Travel North East South West before, definitely check out this incredible blog!
